Every Beach-Style Kitchen Needs An Island

Just because you don’t live by the sea, it doesn’t mean that you should not enjoy a classic beach-style kitchen. What does this style entail? It incorporates a clean and sophisticated style which includes the following elements:

  • Clean, crisp linens
  • Uniquely painted beadboard
  •  Different whites along with blues, charcoal and black
  • Beautiful shell, coral and maritime instrument ornaments

The purpose of the beach-style is not to “smack people in the face” with a whole bunch of beachy things - no. You want to create a calm, carefree atmosphere that subtly incorporates beachy elements.
Incorporating the style into your home’s design is easy. Here are a few ways that you can transform your kitchen to be more coast-like.
Light
Light is probably one of the most important elements in a beach style kitchen - OR in any kitchen. The area should be light and spacious so that the feeling of cleanliness and sophistication illuminates from the area. Main lighting can be used to illuminate the main areas in the kitchen while soft LED lights can light up spaces below cabinets to add an aesthetic appeal.

Colour
Use light hues, accessories and sun-filled/ water-filled pictures in your kitchen. White and creams should be used as the base colour, and colours such as pale beige, blues and greens should be used as secondary, signature and backsplash colours to bring a lively, but still relaxing, feel to your kitchen.

Cabinets
Contemporary laminate surfaces are practical as well as aesthetically pleasing for a beach-style kitchen. You can either choose a surface colour/pattern that mimics hardwood or a soft even colour.

Island
Every beach-style kitchen needs an island. This is ideal for adding surface space, plus you can add a few high stools to the one end of the island to create a casual eating space.

Accessories
When it comes to covering the windows, simple linen curtains, shutters and even striped (sailor-like) curtains complement a simple beachy kitchen. Add a little bit of sea life (shells, beachy backsplashes and driftwood pieces) to your kitchen space. If you add plants, add simple green plants in pot plants, and use vases or  pots that suit your kitchen’s colour scheme.
